Well the good news is we can wave goodbye to all covid-19 restrictions which have all been lifted since August 1st 2022 – Hooray!
Here are the government’s latest regulations for travelling from and back to the UK. The main headline is basically check your passport and documents before you travel (more on that later).
We would add check you have an up to date UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) (previously European Health Insurance Card). This gets you reduced or sometimes free healthcare in France. Apply here.
In addition the government recommend visiting your travel company website. This will also contain useful information for entering France.
But which way to travel? Drive it, plane it or train it? We’re looking into this to help you make the right decision for you.
Flying to the Alps
This week we’re concentrating on fly-drive to Méribel for the fully catered chalet experience of your dreams.
Flying is generally the most expensive and definitely the most carbon footprint heavy way to travel … but it is the quickest way to get you into those skis! Airlines are becoming more carbon footprint conscious and ‘greener’ flights are highlighted which is a good step in the right direction for our beloved planet.
How long will the journey be?
Travelling by aeroplane is a quick and convenient option with average flight times of around 1hr 45mins. If you want maximum time on the slopes no matter what, this could be the way there for you!
Chambéry is the closest international airport to Méribel. Geneva, Grenoble and Lyon Airports are all within two and a quarter hours’ drive with easy transfers.
Chambéry is 1 hr 25 minutes drive away. Geneva, Grenoble and Lyons are all 2 hrs 15 mins drive away.
Where can I fly from?
UK airports that will fly you to your alpine adventure are listed below – plenty of choice wherever you are coming from in the UK:
Airport to Chalet
Pre-booking a transfer from the airport to your accommodation in Méribel is the most hassle free way to organise onward journey to your accommodation. We are more than happy to organise this on your behalf at The Chalet Company.
If you’d like to hire a car try Rentalcars.com. You will need to consider parking if you rent a car – See Meribel provide some very helpful guidance around parking in Méribel.
There is also a public bus service – Altibus – which runs between Geneva Airport and Méribel.
How much will it cost to fly to Méribel?
This all depends when you go. February is the most expensive time because of the half term holidays. April comes in second because of the Easter holidays. Then March. December is next and January is the best value month to ski. On the whole.
Here are a couple of tables showing guideline prices throughout the season. They are based on a family of four (two adults, two kids) travelling from Gatwick to Méribel with two hold suitcases and 4 small cabin bags to four different airports along with transfer costs (using EasyJet, Tui, Mountain Rescue and Alp2Alp Transfer services)
This is not an exact science, and there will be cheaper and more expensive deals, but it gives you a flavour of average price tags for a fly drive ski holiday in beautiful Méribel.
Et voilá – lots of practical travel info around how to fly to your dream ski holiday. Chambéry is the closest airport to Méribel so if it’s all about getting there quick sticks that’s the airport for you. As you will see prices fluctuate through the ski season but flying to Chambéry is the cheapest option in December and January …
