Today we’re looking into that idyll of ‘letting the train take the strain’
A relaxing ‘green’ and quick way to travel. You will be ensconced in your alpine retreat in under 10 hours of leaving London St Pancras. Eg leave on an 8.16am train, arrive in Moutiers at 5.40pm and be in your Chalet for aperitifs at 6pm. Nice. If you like the idea of a fantastically picturesque daytime journey, transitioning from UK landscapes through to the breathtakingly beautiful alps, you can book the Eurostar from London St Pancras to Moutiers. There’s one change from Gare du Nord to Gare de Lyon and a 30 minute transfer from Moutiers to Méribel. Transfer between the Paris train stations can be done on the RER line D (Direction Melun) in just two stops. Allowing time to buy tickets and walk to and from platforms usually takes between 20 and 40 minutes. Alternatively, if carrying lots of baggage, take a 30 minute taxi journey for about £15. You will have over an hour between the connecting trains alighting in Paris Gare du Nord and departing for Moutiers from Paris Gare de Lyon. With great relations with established transfer companies The Chalet Company staff will be very happy to help organise your transfer from Moutiers. If you would like to look into this yourself, the options are:- taxi or private transfer. You can book online in advance with Ski-lifts who also have a 24/7 English language helpline which can be useful if the train is late.
- Scheduled bus services – see www.mobisavoie.fr
- We regularly use and recommend G-taxis (English spoken)
The cost?
For a family of four it would be roughly around £1,000 plus transfers between Paris stations and Moutiers and Méribel which would be covered by around £75 if not less. These are roughly researched averages. It could be more or less depending on when you go and what deals you / we find! The cost to the planet?
Much less than flying. Eurostar are proud to point out the following ‘green’ credentials:- carbon footprint from one flight can be the same as 13 eurostar journeys
- trains are 100% electric, producing less CO2 than a flight
- many of their trains are wind powered and they have a target to be entirely wind powered by 2030
- they are reducing paper ticketing
- their business and Standard Premier menus have the highest 3-star rating from the Sustainable Restaurant Association
- staff care for nine beehives which produce honey for their onboard menu for business premier lounges
- food waste is turned into fertiliser and compost for local farmland and garden centres
- they have begun to reduce plastic use onboard – and lots more!
